  Essential Oils  
 
  Img9.png Essential oils are very versatile.  Although they are all antiseptic and stimulate the immune system, each one also has its own unique properties.  Below are listed some of the most common uses for each oil.  The common name as well as the Latin name is given to avoid confusion on plants the may have similar, or mistaken common names. The plant part, according to plant signatures, gives an indication as the plants general use.  The keynote indicates what property the oil is best known for.

Basil Ocimum basilicum L- Basil is a lovely aromatic plant often used in cooking.  It has a very light fragrance that evaporated quickly making it a top note.

·         Plant part: whole plant

·         Keynote: concentration

·         Cephalic

·         Mental fatigue

·         Mental strain

·         Depression

·         Dyspepsia

 

 

Bitter orange Citrus aurantium- This citrus tree has a fruit of bitter orange.  There are three different essential oils produced from the tree, best known of which is Neroli.  An essential oil from the peel of the fruit is uncommon but lovely.  It can be use in place of Orange. It is similar to orange but slightly more acidic or bitter, less sweet. 

 

•         Plant part: peel

•         Keynote :joy

•         Depression

•         Anti-spasmodic

•         Cellulite

•         Scars

 

*This oil is photosensitizing and should not be used in the sun.

 

Chamomile Matricaria chamomilla-Chamomile is well known as an herb for it’s calming and sedative properties.  As an essential oil it has the strongest odour intensity of all the oils, meaning that very little is needed to over power a blend.  Although the flower is yellow the essential oil is blue or green due to its high Azuline content.  It evaporates quickly making it a top note.

•         Keynote: calming, anti-inflammatory

•         Anti-depressive

•         Emollient

•         Sedative

•         Anxiety

•         Vomiting

 

Clary Sage Salvia sclarea-Clary is traditionally known as ‘clear eye’ or ‘bright eye’.  It is said t give clear vision, in the spiritual sense.  The essential oil should NEVER be used on the eyes.  It is also closely related to the Divine feminine which is why it is used for feminine issues as well as intuition.  It is a middle note and blends well with most floral oils.

•         Keynote: women’s oil

•         Estrogen-like

•         Menstruation

•         Frigidity

•         Hypertension

•         Dream work

 

Coriander Coriandrum sativum-Coriander is a seed well known in cooking.  It has a very good effect on the digestive tract.  It is settling on both the physical and emotional levels.  It is a nice addition to a blend both for it’s settling properties as well as it’s gentle but slightly spicy fragrance.

 

•         Plant part: seeds

•         Keynote: settling

•         Antispasmodic

•         Detoxifier

•         Infertility

•         Stimulant

•         Analgesic

 

 

Cumin Cuminum cyminum-Cumin is well known in Middle Eastern and Indian cooking. As with most spices used in the east it also works to prevent intestinal problems and food spoilage.  As an essential oil it is has a VERY strong fragrance and my over power a blend.

 

•         Plant part: seeds

•         Keynote: purification

•         Digestive aid

•         Antispasmodic

•         Detoxifier

 

 

Geranium Pelargonium graveolens-Geranium is a lovely oil with a beautiful rose-like fragrance.  Its main focus is on balancing and uplifting.  It is a middle note and blends well with other oils.

 

•         Plant part: whole plant

•         Keynote: toning

•         Balancing

•         Anxiety

•         Depression

•         Hormones

•         PMT

 

  

Jasmine Absolute Jasminum officinale-Jasmine is one of the most expensive oils in the world but well worth it.  Although it is a middle note it is very strong.  A little goes a long way, so not much is needed.  It is a deeply sensual oil.  It is an aphrodisiac in the way of being a very grounding oil.  Excellent oil for work on the sacral chakra.

•         Depression

•         Confidence

•         Aphrodisiac

•         Childbirth

•         Apathy

 

 

Lemongrass Cymbopogon citrates-Lemongrass is an excellent oil for decongesting of any kind whether it be the lungs during a flu or stored toxins as in cellulite. It has a very pleasing lemony fragrance.

 

•         Plant part: grass

•         Keynote: decongesting

•         Diuretic

•         Insect repellant

•         Cellulite

•         Fungicide

 

 

Marjoram Origanum majorana-The keynote of this oil is relaxation.  It has very strong sedative properties and should be added to any blend where relaxation is desired.  It is a middle note, has a strong herbal fragrance and blends well with many oils both of the citrus and floral families.

 

•         Plant part: flowering tops

•         Keynote: relaxation

•          Sedative

•         Anxiety

•         Insomnia

•         Stress related conditions

 

*This oil is contraindicated for people with Asthma

 

 

Melissa Melissa officinalis-Melissa is the mostly highly adulterated oil.  The reason for this is that is very expensive so imitations are created.  It should only be purchases from a high reputable source.  Because of its cost it is not a widely used oil, but should be reserved for extreme circumstances such as deep grief.  It is a middle not and has a lovely lemony scent.

 

•         Plant part: leaves and flowering tops

•         Keynote: Grief

•         Most frequently adulterated oil

•         Depression

•         Shock

•         Uplifting

 

Mugwort Artemisia vulgaris-Mugwort is a Neurotoxin and has Abortive effects.  It should be used with extreme caution.  It’s only recommended use is to clear bad energies out of a room.  In this case it must be used with extreme care.  The room must be well ventilated after use, before humans or animals enter it.

 

 

Neroli (Orange Blossom) Citrus aurantium-Neroli is commonly known as Orange Blossom.  The essential oil is produced from the blossom of the bitter orange tree.  The water from the distillation is also used, and known as hydrosol or floral water.  It is a middle note and has a light citrus yet slightly acidic fragrance.

•         Keynote: anxiety

•         Depression

•         Aphrodisiac

•         Palpitations

•         Scars

•         Spasms

 

 

Petitgrain- Petitgrains are made from the leaves of a citrus tree.  There are three different types produced in Egypt.  The most common is Petitgrain bigaradier (Citrus lim var amara), also produced and very lovely are Petitgrain citronnier (Citrus lim var pusilla) and Petitgrain mandarine (Citrus reticulate)

 

•         Plant part: leaves

•         Keynote: anger

•         Panic

•         Mental clarity

•         Excessive perspiration

•         Depression

 

 

Rose Absolute Rosa damascana-Rose is one of the most beautiful oils produced.  Most of the ‘Rose’ fragrance on the market is imitation, so we have lost our sense of what rose really smells like.  It is said that the Angels smell like Rose, when you spontaneously smell Rose, the Angles are nearby.  It is a middle note and blends well with many oils from other floral to spicy fragrances.  It is strongly associated with the Heart Chakra and compassion.

 

•         Plant part: flowers

•         Keynote: love

•         Stimulates creativity

•         Depression

•         Cardiac congestion

•         PMT

•         Aphrodisiac

 

 

Rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis-Rosemary is a VERY stimulating oil.  It is a middle note and has a strong herbal fragrance.  It blends well with citrus oils, and is strongly associated with the Solar Plexus.

 

•         Plant part: flowering tops, twigs

•         Keynote: stimulating

•         Learning

•         Vertigo

•         Liver tonic

•         Cephalic

•         Clearing rooms

 

* This essential oil is strongly contraindicated in people with Asthma

 

 

Tagetes Tagetes minuta-Tagetes is a little known oil with a pungent fragrance.  Alone it is very strong but blends well with other oils.  It is best blended with spicy or citrus oils as it has a very sweet smell.  It is a base note and is associated with the Solar Plexus.

 

•         Plant part: Flowers

•         Keynote: Fungicide

•         Mastitis

•         Bunions

•         Ego

•         Antispasmodic
